Sleep is part of the training plan

Taekwondo practice uses attention as well as energy. A steady sleep routine supports a young person's overall health, focus, and readiness for school and activities.

Families often ask how to help a child feel ready for class. Sleep is one everyday part of the picture. Getting enough sleep helps a student feel rested and supports focus and concentration; the CDC also connects adequate sleep with overall health and well-being.

How much sleep do children need?

The CDC relays these recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine:

  • Ages 3–5: 10–13 hours per 24 hours, including naps.
  • Ages 6–12: 9–12 hours per 24 hours.
  • Ages 13–18: 8–10 hours per 24 hours.

These are general recommendations. Every child is different, and this article does not diagnose sleep problems or promise a particular sports result.

Try a routine the family can repeat

A regular bedtime and wake-up time can make the week more predictable. Families might also try a calmer wind-down, dimmer lights in the evening, and a screen break before bed. Choose changes that fit your household rather than turning bedtime into another performance test.

Keep training in perspective

More practice is not always the answer when a young student seems tired. A missed class, a quiet practice day, or an earlier bedtime may be more useful than adding extra conditioning. Talk with the instructor if fatigue is affecting participation. For persistent sleep concerns, ask the child's health care professional.
