Our lineage

Moo Duk Kwan: a tradition of martial virtue

Bulsajo teaches a traditional Moodukkwan Taekwondo curriculum. The lineage offers a way to understand the forms, terminology, and character expectations that are part of our practice.

World Moo Duk Kwan emblem

Moo Duk Kwan is commonly translated as “school of martial virtue.” Bulsajo's published lineage page identifies it as the tradition from which our curriculum descends and describes its founding in 1945 by Hwang Kee. For a fuller historical account, consult the school's World Moo Duk Kwan page and the organization it references.

What lineage means in class

A lineage connects today's practice to a teaching tradition. At Bulsajo, it informs the forms students learn, the Korean terminology they hear, and the emphasis on conduct as well as physical technique. The instructor can explain how a particular movement or lesson fits into a student's current rank.

Martial virtue is part of training

Skill and character are taught together. Courtesy toward training partners, honesty about effort, and perseverance through difficult material all shape the way a student practices. These values give context to the bow at the door and the care expected during partner work.
