World Moo Duk Kwan

Moo Duk Kwan — the school of martial virtue — is the lineage our curriculum descends from. The forms, the terminology and the emphasis on character over trophies all come from this tradition.

Where The Dojang's Character Comes From

Moo Duk Kwan was founded by Hwang Kee in 1945, in the first months after the Japanese occupation of Korea ended, and it is one of the original kwans — the founding schools that Taekwondo itself was assembled from. The name means the school of martial virtue, and the order of those words is the point: the virtue is not a side effect of the training, it is the subject of it.

The World Moo Duk Kwan organization carries that lineage today, with member schools and country organizations across the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and it keeps a central registry of the members who hold rank in it.

What It Means For A Bulsajo Student

This is the part of Bulsajo you feel before you can name it. It is why students bow at the door, why the dojang goes quiet when it should, why an instructor will correct a child's manners as readily as their side kick, and why nobody here is impressed by a trophy earned by someone who is unpleasant to train with.

The forms your child learns, the Korean terminology they are taught, and the standard they are held to at every one of the eleven ranks all descend from this line.
